New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 30
Despite having home conditions working in their favour, the New York Yankees were unable to come up with the winning formula in Game 2 of a three match series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Joe Girardi and his boys claimed a comfortable 5-3 win in the opener.
With momentum on their side, they were the favourites to take a decisive 2-0 series lead but the Rays raised their game play to a higher level to stay alive in the series.
In Game 2 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY, the Rays dominated their American League East rivals in almost all aspects of the game for a 4-1 win. Rays’ starting rotation played a big part in deciding the outcome of the clash. Starting pitcher Jeff Niemann
played led from the front, allowing just six hits and one earned run in seven solid innings.
Niemann made great use of his fastballs sliders, helping the Rays dictate terms for most part of the contest. Fernando Rodney grabbed his second win of the season as tossed two scoreless innings.
"It's the worst feeling in the world," Yankees’ closer David Robertson said. "You watch when Mo does it, he comes back the next day and he's the same guy. He goes right back out there, takes the mound and does his thing. I'm going to have to do that tomorrow."
"Eventually, I'm not going to be able to get out of all my messes that I create. It was really tough, just a sad way to end the game," Robertson said. "You're not always going to be perfect out there. I had a good stretch. It just stinks when you do give
up the runs."
Yankees’ starter David Phelps had one of his career best nights as he conceded just three hits in four plus scoreless innings. David Robertson took the loss, thanks to a four run 0.2 innings. Robinson Cano provided the Yankees with an excellent start as
he doubled to left in the first inning but the Rays were determined to turn things around. B.J. Upton hit a sacrifice fly and Matt Joyce smacked a three run home run in the bottom of the ninth to deny Yankees’ a deserving victory.
