New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 31
After taking an embarrassing 1-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 2 of the series, the New York Yankees were looking to regroup and fight back in the finale to earn an important series victory.
Manager Joe Girardi and his men used their home conditions superbly on May 10 at Yankee Stadium, New York to outclass the Rays in finer details of the game. In a post game interview, Girardi said that it was a welcome win for his team.
Yankees’ starting pitcher CC Sabathia laid the foundations of an impressive win as he allowed just seven hits and two runs in eight innings. He also struck out a season high 10 batters, creating all sorts of problems for the Yankees’ batting lineup. Relief
pitcher Rafael Soriano also played his part in the outcome of the clash as he held his nerves under pressure in the ninth inning.
Carlos Pena gave Rays the early 1-0 lead as he singled to right in the first inning. Third baseman Sean Rodriguez singled to right centre in the second inning to double Rays’ lead to 2-0. Curtis Granderson helped the Yankees get back into the contest as
he homered to right in the second inning, reducing the deficit to 1-2.
"CC seems to be the big guy right now," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
"I was fired up I was going to make pitches to B.J. Upton," Sabathia said in a post game interview.
"I didn't know that stat that I hadn't beat him," he added.
"I made some good pitches tonight, they hit them, that's it," Price said. "It's a good hitting team. You make mistakes and they hit them."
Chris Stewart earned an RBI single to centre in the second and Robinson Cano belted a two run home run to right in the fifth to help the Yankees come back from behind for a substantial 5-2 lead. Will Rhymes grounded out to shortstop to keep his team’s alive
but the night belonged to the Yankees. With their famous win over their American League rivals, the Yankees also improved their win-loss record to 17-14.
