New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 33
After securing a comfortable 6-2 win in the opener, the New York Yankees were looking to crush the Seattle Marines in Game 2 of the three match series as well. Joe Girardi and his men made a very aggressive start to the contest and continued to put pressure
on the Mariners right till the end of the contest.
Starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda played a big part in deciding the 6-2 outcome of the clash as he allowed just six hits and two runs in seven sharp innings. The veteran right hander used his fastballs and slider extremely effectively to create all sorts of
problems for the Mariners’ batting lineup.
Relief pitchers Clay Rapada, Cory Wade, Bone Logan and David Robertson combined to toss up two scoreless innings. Mariners’ starter Felix Hernandez had a horrendous time on the mound as he allowed 11 hits and four runs in just over six innings to take his
third loss of the season. Relievers Charlie Furbush and Steve Delabar were also unable to control the flow of runs as they combined to concede three hits and two runs in just over an inning.
"When you're facing an elite pitcher like him, sometimes the first pitch is the best one he's going to throw you," Ibanez said. "Then he gets nasty."
"I was throwing that sinker for the first pitch," Hernandez said detailing the mistake that caused the homer: "That was in the middle of the plate."
"I was thinking in my mind, 'Keep working him, keep working him. See if you can get this guy tired,'" Girardi recalled. "I think maybe Jeter's at-bat was the start of something."
Dustin Ackley homered to left in the first inning to put Mariners on the board. Yankees responded immediately, thanks to Robinson Cano who singled to right in the first to level score 1-1.
Jesus Montero’s solo home run in the sixth restored Mariners’ one run lead but the Yankees were determined to wrap up a superb series victory. Raul Ibanez and Andruw Jones hit back to back home runs to help their side come back from behind to steal a thrilling
win at Yankee Stadium in New York.
