New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 34
After losing in first two the New York Yankees, the Seattle Mariners were looking to regroup and fight back in the finale to avoid an embarrassing series sweep. Yankees, on the other hand, had an excellent chance to end the series on a bright note but that
did not turn out to be the case Mariners played out of their skins to secure a deserving 6-2 win.
Making the most of available opportunities at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY, the Mariners grabbed a much needed win to deny the Yankees an impressive series sweep. Mariners’ starting pitcher Kevin Millwood displayed some top quality hitting skills as he
allowed just three hits and one run in seven innings to grab his first win of the season. After taking humiliating losses on his first previous four appearances, Millwood used his fastballs and sliders very effectively.
Relief pitchers Tom Wilhelmsen, Lucas Luetge, Steve Delabar, Charlie Furbush and Brandon League combined to give up just one run in two innings of relief as the Mariners held on to their four run lead to take a crucial win.
"I just cannot believe how comfortable this is for me," Pettitte said. "I don't know how to explain it."
"I thought it was so awesome. I was so excited. I know we lost today and that's what a lot of people are going to focus on -- I could really care less about that," Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher said. "We got our boy back."
"There is not a question in my mind how this is all going to play out for me," Pettitte said. "It's not about this one start. I'll measure if this was a successful return or not at the end of October."
For the Yankees, starter Andy Pettitte had a difficult time on the mound as he allowed seven hits and four runs in six plus innings to take his first loss of the season. Relief pitcher Cory Wade and Clay Rapada also struggled to control the flow of runs,
allowing two runs in two plus innings.
Justin Smoak homered to left in the fourth inning to break the deadlock and put his side on the board. Russell Martin and Robinson Cano made valuable contributions with the bat but the night belonged to Seattle.
