New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 35
New York Yankee started their two match series against the Baltimore Orioles on a very bright note. Showing great determination, fighting spirit and mental toughness, the Yankees outclassed their American League East Division rivals in finer details of the
game to take a vital 1-0 series lead.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Ivan Nova had a big impact on the game as he allowed seven hits and five runs in a high scoring contest. Striking out batters at regular intervals, he ensured the Yankees had complete control of the situation.
Relief pitcher David Phelps grabbed his first win of the season after he pitched the scoreless inning. Clay Rapada, Bone Logan, Cory Wade and Rafael Soriano all made useful contributions to help the Yankees hold on to their slim lead.
Orioles’ starter Jason Hammel paid the ultimate price for his errors on the mound, giving up seven hits and five runs in just five innings. Relief pitcher Luis Ayala took the loss after conceding two hits and two runs in just two innings of relief.
"I hope that helps put me on a roll," Teixeira said.

"X had a good night," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. "I was real proud of him."
"On that last play, I twisted it," Nova said. "I don't want to miss any starts. Hopefully, it will feel better. It is a little (swollen) right now."
"I was hoping it was one of those things that would go away," Robertson said in a post game interview. "But it keeps hanging around. Honestly, I don't think it's too bad."
Third baseman J.J. Hardy and Adam Jones provided the Orioles with an excellent start. Yankees’ outfielder Nick Swisher brought his side back into the contest as he doubled to deep right centre in the fourth inning to level score 2-2.
Curtis Granderson homered to right centre in the fifth and Raul Ibanez reached first base safely on a throwing error to keep Yankees in the hunt. Mark Teixeira homered to right in the seventh and Eric Chavez hit a sacrifice fly to centre in the ninth to
ensure the Yankees reach home safely.
