New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 40
New York Yankees secured a comfortable 4-0 win in the opener and they were looking to continue their good form in Game 2 to take a decisive 2-0 series lead. Cincinnati Reds, on the other hand, were looking to learn from their mistakes to turn the table son
their opponents.
Showing great determination and fighting spirit, the Reds outclassed the Yankees on May 19 for a 6-5 win, levelling up the series. Starting pitcher Homer Bailey showed no respect for the Yankees’ batting lineup as he allowed seven hits and three runs in
just over six innings to lay the foundations of Cincinnati’s victory.
Relief pitchers Logan Ondrusek and Aroldis Chapman also showed nerves of steel under pressure as they combined to pitch 1.2 scoreless innings. Closer Jose Arredondo held off the Yankees to save his first game of the season.
Yankees’ starter Ivan Nova struggled to execute his game plan to perfection as he allowed seven hits and five runs in six innings. Although Nova struck out 12 batters, he was unable to control the flow of runs. Closer David Phelps gave up the tie breaking
single in the eighth.
"We just didn't get the last hit that we needed," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It's good that we're able to come back, but it's frustrating that you get so close and lose."
"It wasn't fun the way it ended," Votto said. "Well, I take that back. It was fun the way it ended. Just a little bit nerve-racking at the end, but that's part of wins and losses and it was nice for Jose to come in and pick us up."
"I could have done without the drama, but we did win the game," Reds’ Manager Dusty Baker said.
After the Reds took the early 2-0 lead, Russell Martin homered to right in the third inning to put Yankees on the board. Raul Ibanez doubled to shallow right in the fourth inning to level score 2-2. Joey Votto’s three run home run extended Reds’ lead to
5-2. Yankees fought back well in closing stages of the contest but the Reds held on to their slim lead to complete a deserving victory.
