New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 41
New York Yankees were outclassed by the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 in Game 2 of the series. Yankees’ Manager Jim Leyland was expecting his men to regroup and fight back in the finale to earn an important series victory against their National League rivals but the
Reds played out of their skins to secure a deserving 5-2 win at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY.
Reds’ starting pitcher Johnny Cueto pitched with great control and accuracy as he allowed just two runs in seven solid innings for his fifth win of the season. Striking out batters at regular intervals, he ensured the Reds had complete control of the situation.
His counterpart from New York, CC Sabathia also had a decent time on the mound as he conceded just six hits and three runs in seven innings. However, the Yankees’ ace was unfortunate to end up with his second loss of the season.
Relief pitcher Cory Wade and Rafael Soriano also made useful contributions as they combined to pitch 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. Boone Logan paid the ultimate price for his errors, allowing two hits and two runs in just 0.1 innings of relief.
"Either inning for me is the same," closer Aroldis Chapman said through a translator. "Maybe one day things will get complicated and I'll get some pressure, but I don't feel that."
"Home runs are American League baseball. Everyone's going to give them up. That's the bottom line," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said at the end of the contest.
"He wasn't wild until the last inning. He was pretty darn good before that, so I wouldn't make too much of it," Girardi said of CC Sabathia in a post game interview.
Outfielder Raul Ibanez provided the Yankees with an excellent start as he homered to right in the sixth inning to break the deadlock and put his side on the board. Reds were also determined to win the series. Ryan Ludwick hit a two run home run to left in
the seventh inning to give Reds a vital 2-1 lead. Yankees fought hard but they were not good enough to win on the day.
