New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 43
New York Yankees fought back superbly in Game 2 of the series, showing determination fighting abilities and mental strength for a vital 3-2 series lead. Kansas City Royals had dominated their American League rivals in the opener and they had an excellent
chance to wrap up a famous win at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY.
But the Yankees were composed and the rallied for a 3-2 win to keep the series alive. Starting pitcher Phil Hughes showed nerves of steel under pressure as he allowed five hits and two runs in six solid innings to lay the foundations of an impressive Yankees’
victory.
Striking out batters at regular intervals, he ensured the Yankees were in the driving seat. Relief pitchers Cory Wade, Boone Logan, Cody Eppley, Clay Rapada and Rafael Soriano all made useful contributions, helping the Yankees hold on their slim lead. Closer
Soriano pitched the scoreless ninth under immense pressure, saving his third game of the season.
"It wasn't that pretty, but that was a good win," said Rodriguez. "It felt really good to win a game like this. Sometimes you need a game like this to kind of get you on a roll. Hopefully it's a good sign of things to come. We haven't been winning these
kinds of games."
"I don't think there's many other first basemen in the league that could stretch like that and make that play," Hughes said.
"We scored a lot of runs right after that and piled on," Jeter said sarcastically.
Royals’ starter Luke Hochevar also had a decent time on the mound but the night did not belong to him. He allowed six hits and three runs in six plus innings to take his third loss of the season.
Humberto Quintero doubled to right in the third inning to break the deadlock and put his side on the board. Jeff Francoeur smacked a home run to left in the fourth to double Royals’ lead to 2-0. Robinson Cano’s home run to right centre to bring Yankees back
into the contest. Captain Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson also drove in the winning runs.
