New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 45
New York Yankees continued their excellent winning streak in their next three match series against the Oakland Athletics. In Game 1 on May 25, the Yankees dominated the A’s in almost all departments of the game for a valuable 6-3 win. With their superb effort,
Joe Girardi and his men improved their regular season record to 23-21.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Ivan Nova had a great time on the mound as he allowed just three runs on six hits in seven solid innings to grab his fifth win of the season. Striking out batters at regular intervals, the right hander ensured his side was in a
strong position.
Relief pitchers Boone Logan and closer Rafael Soriano also played a key role in deciding the outcome of the contest. Closer Soriano pitched the scoreless ninth to ensure the Yankees reach home safely. Athletics’ starter Tyson Ross seemed to have no plan
as he struggled to stop the flow of runs on the mound. Overall, he allowed 12 hits and six runs in just over four innings to take his fifth loss of the season.
"The last few games have been good for us," Teixeira said. "We're used to scoring that many runs. It's kind of more normal for us. ... We're a team that's used to hitting a lot of them and we'd like to hit a little bit more."
"These guys are too good for this to continue to go on," manager Joe Girardi said. "All clubs go through it at times and it's no fun when you're going through it. It feels like, 'When is it going to end?' sometimes. We're starting to swing the bats better."
Robinson Cano had another impressive outing as he doubled to deep right centre in the third inning to break the deadlock and put Yankees on the board. Mark Teixeira continued his stunning hitting form as he smacked a two run home run to right in the third
inning to stretch Yankees’ lead to 3-0.
Josh Reddick’s home run in the fourth brought A’s back into the contest but New York was destined to prevail. Cano and outfielder Nick Swisher struck back to back home runs to close out a comfortable win for their team.
