New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 48
Riding on a five match winning streak, New York Yankees were the firm favourites to emerge victorious against the Los Angeles Angels. However, despite having the momentum on their side, the Yankees were unable to come up with the winning formula.
Angels, on the other hand, used their home conditions absolutely superbly to prevail 9-8 in a thrilling encounter. Showing great determination, fighting spirits and mental toughness, the Angels secure a narrow win in the opener to start the series on a winning
note.
Both teams displayed some high quality baseball skills in a game that was played on an extremely competitive note. Angels held their nerves in pressure situations to give their fans something to cheer about at Angel Stadium of Anaheim in Los Angeles.
"I was super proud of the way we came together against a really good team," said Trumbo. "Of course they're going to score some runs in that situation, but it's huge the way we came back from the first inning on."
"Hopefully it's a breakout game," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "During the streak, we have not been swinging the bat well. We've been doing just enough to win, so hopefully this will get us to a different place."
"I can't say enough for the guys that went out there (in relief)," he added. "Those guys stepped up and did great."
Yankees’ starting pitcher Phil Hughes paid the ultimate price for his errors on the mound as he allowed 11 hits and seven runs in just over five innings. Relief pitchers Cody Eppley, David Phelps, Boone Logan and Cory Wade were also unable to control the
flow of runs as they combined to give up two runs in three plus innings.
Hughes’ counterpart from the Angels Jered Weaver also had a horrendous time on the mound as he allowed two hits and three runs. Closer Jordan Walden pitched two scoreless innings to help Angels hold on to a slim lead.
Nick Swisher, Russell Martin, Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson made valuable contributions with the bat but the night belonged to the Angels who scored runs on regular basis throughout the contest.
