New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 5
New York Yankees secured a comfortable win in Game 1 of a three match series against the Baltimore Orioles and they continued the good work in Game 2 to take a decisive 2-0 series lead.
Despite having the home conditions working in their favour, the Orioles were unable to find winning ways. The match was played on a very competitive note as both teams fought for the supremacy. Yankees showed nerves of steel under pressure to prevail in
the 12th inning.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Freddy Garcia created all sorts of problems for the Orioles’ batting lineup as he allowed four runs in just over four innings. Relief pitchers David Phelps, David Robertson, Bone Logan, Chris Wade and Clay Rapada combined to pitch
three plus scoreless innings to give the Yankees a deserving win at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland. Mariano Rivera pitched the perfect ninth to save his first game of the season.
"When Buck walked to me I was pretty upset about myself because I didn't have command tonight," Chen said through an interpreter. "I didn't help the team get a win tonight. This is the reason I'm here, to help the team get a win. I'm not satisfied."
"Physically, I'm not tired at all," Chen said. "Mentally, I got tired."
"To be honest with you guys, this is my first major league outing. I was so nervous," Chen said. "But after the first inning everything was fine for me."
"I didn't really make good pitches tonight. I was all over the place," Garcia said.
Orioles’ starter Wei Yin Chen paid the ultimate price for his errors on the mound, conceding seven hits in five plus innings.
Captain Derek Jeter provided the Yankees with a dream start as he smacked a solo home run to centre in the first inning to put his side on the board. Andrew Jones, Russell Martin and outfielder Brett Gardner all displayed some top quality hitting skills
to force the game into the extra inning. Raul Ibanez drove in the tie breaking single in the 12th to ensure the Yankees reach home safely.
