New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 50
After taking an embarrassing loss to the Los Angeles in first two games, the New York Yankees were looking to regroup and fight o avoid a humiliating series sweep at Angel Stadium of Anaheim in California and that is exactly what the Yankees did in the finale
of a three match series. Showing great determination, fighting abilities and mental toughness, Joe Girardi and company rallied for a 6-5 win to claim their first win of the season.
Starting pitcher Ivan Nova had a decent time on the mound as he pitched six plus innings. Allowing eight hits and five runs, he managed to keep his side in the hunt right till the end. Relief pitchers Boone Logan, Cory Wade and Rafael Soriano all made useful
contributions as they combined to toss up two scoreless innings, helping New York hold on to a slim lead.
"It's the difference in our game, what our bullpen did," manager Joe Girardi said. "It's nice. (Going) 4-2 on this road trip so far sounds better than 3-3."
"I'm just up there trying to hit [it] hard every time and help us win," Trumbo said. "Whether it's caught or not, you can't help that."
"At some point I'm going to start pitching better, and hopefully it's soon," Nova said. "The whole team battled, and we won. That's more important than what I did."
"I'm a home run pitcher," Santana said. "I'm a power pitcher, and, if they make good contact."
Angels’ starter Ervin Santana also showed nerves of steel as he gave up six hits and five runs while striking out four batters. Relief pitcher Hisanori Takahashi took the loss after he gave up the tie breaking single in the sixth.
Mark Trumbo hit a sacrifice fly to right in the first inning to put Angels on the board. For the Yankees, outfielder Curtis Granderson smacked a three run home run in the third inning to put his side 3-1 ahead. Robinson Cano homered to right in the third
and Nick Swisher hit a sacrifice fly to left in the sixth inning to ensure the Yankees reach home safely.
