New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 51
New York Yankees started their next series against the Detroit Tigers on a very bright note. Making the most of available opportunities, Joe Girardi and company outclassed their American League rivals in almost all aspects of the game in Game 1 at Comerica
Park in Detroit, Michigan.
Yankees’ starting pitcher CC Sabathia played a bit part in determining the result of the contest. The big left hander gave up just eight hits and three runs in seven solid innings. Striking out batters at regular intervals, Sabathia ensured the Yankees were
in a strong position.
"I feel fine," Granderson said in a post game interview with ESPN.com. "That's the crazy thing."
"That inning just got away from me," Crosby said with disappointment on his face. "By that point, I was trying too hard to get something over the plate, and I left a fastball where Granderson could put a huge swing on it."
"You've got to go out and battle," Sabathia said. "I felt like that's what it was today. It was a battle."
"The big thing with this team is just -- pass it to the next guy," Granderson said.
Relief pitcher Cody Eppley, Boone Logan, Cory Wade and Clay Rapada all made useful contributions as the Yankees held on to their lead comfortable to take 1-0 series lead. For the Tigers, starter Colby Crosby paid the ultimate price for his errors on the
mound, allowing four hits and six runs in just over three innings to take his first loss of the season. Unable to execute his game plan, Crosby ended up with a forgettable 16.20 ERA.
Relief pitcher Brayan Villarreal and Octavio Dotel also struggled to control the flow of runs as they combined to give up three hits and three runs in two innings of relief.
After the Tigers took the early lead, Captain Derek Jeter walked in the second inning to put Yankees on the board. Curtis Granderson smacked a grand slam in the second to extend Yankees’ lead to 5-1. Tigers’ fought back well in closing stages of the game
but the night belonged to the Yankees.
