New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 52
New York Yankees had dominated the Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of a three match series. Manager Joe Girardi was expecting his men to continue the good work in Game 2 of the series as well but that did not turn out to be the case as Tigers played out of their
skins to level up the series 1-1.
Jim Leyland and his men used their home condition superbly in Game 2 on June 2 as they rallied for a 4-3 win to stay alive in the series. Starting pitcher Rick Porcello pitched with great control and accuracy as he allowed six hits and one run in six innings
to keep Yankees on the defensive.
Relief pitchers Phil Coke, Joaquin Benoit and Octavio Dotel combined to allow just one run in two innings of relief. Closer Jose Valverde pitched the scoreless ninth for his second win of the season.
"That was a lot of footage, to say the least," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "But that's just what that guy's capable of doing."
"I've played a lot of games here, and I don't even believe it is 420 out there -- it is 420 at other places, and it never seems as big as it does here," said New York centre fielder Curtis Granderson, "I know I've never seen anyone put two balls where he
put those two balls tonight. I've seen one or two near the camera well, but that wasn't in a game, and I've never seen anything land where the first one went."
Yankees’ starter Hiroki Kuroda had a great time on the mound but he was unfortunate to end up on the losing side. Striking out batters at regular intervals, he kept Yankees in the hunt for most part of the contest. Relief pitcher David Phelps gave conceded
the tie breaking single in the ninth.
Miguel Cabrera smacked a home run to centre in the fourth inning to put Tigers on the board. Rookie Quintin Berry singled to right and Cabrera hit his second home run of the game in the eighth to restore Tigers’ one run lead. Omir Santos drove in the go
ahead run in the bottom of the ninth.
