New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 56
New York Yankees continued their excellent work in Game 2 of a three match series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Making the most of available opportunities, the batting lineup posted a decent total on the board. Yankees’ starting rotation, once again, showed
the stuff its capable of, limiting the Rays to just one run in scoring friendly conditions at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY.
Mark Teixeira provided the Yankees with a dream start as he smacked a solo home run to right in the second inning to put his side on the board. With momentum on their side, the Yankees continued to put pressure on Rays’ pitchers.
Second baseman Robinson Cano made his presence felt with a home run to right in the fourth inning, stretching Yankees’ lead to 2-0. Outfielder Nick Swisher doubled to deep right and Eric Chavez doubled to deep centre in the eighth to give New York an impassable
4-0 lead.
"He was just dialed in tonight," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said with a big smile on his face.
"Especially when everybody's pitching good, I don't want to be the guy behind," Nova said answering a question. "I want to be with those guys pitching good."
"He just had his stuff today. He just had it," Upton said of Nova in a post game interview. "Cobb threw a good game, too."
"A better game played on our part, even if we didn't win," Maddon said in an interview with ESPN.com. "I thought we played better, we pitched better, we just did not hit."
For the Rays, B.J. Upton tripled to deep right in the ninth. However, apart from Upton none of the hitters could come up with the scoring shots.
Yankees’ starter Ivan Nova continued his sensational winning streak as he allowed just four hits and one run in eight solid innings to claim his seventh win of the season. Striking out five batters, he dominated the Rays right from the start of the contest.
Closer Rafael Soriano also had a decent outing as he tossed up the perfect ninth to save his first game of the season.
