New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 58
After securing comfortable wins in first two games of a three match series against the Tampa Bay Rays, the New York Yankees were looking to continue the good work in the finale to secure a deserving series sweep but the Rays played out of their skins in
Game on June 7 to get their first win of the series.
Rays’ batting lineup, in particular, played a big part in deciding the outcome of the clash. Catcher Jose Lobaton provided the Rays with an excellent start as he singled to right in the second inning to put his side on the board. Ben Zobrist singled to centre
in the third inning to restore Rays’ one run lead.
B.J. Upton had an excellent time on the plate as he hit a sacrifice fly to centre and Drew Sutton doubled to left in the fourth to stretch Rays’ lead to 5-1. Sutton doubled to right and shortstop Elliot Johnson added to double to deep left centre in the
ninth inning to end the game on an extremely competitive note for his team.
"David was outstanding. He only threw five innings, but it was almost like he threw a complete game," Maddon said. "The at-bat with A-Rod. Curveball, curveball, curveball, curveball. Strike three was incredible. Just an outstanding performance."
"That's not the position that I want to be in against anybody, especially against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium," Price said.
"We gave them an extra out," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I thought CC threw pretty well, they just put their hits together. He kept us in the game."
For the Yankees, Raul Ibanez singled to centre in the eighth and Russell Martin smacked a home run to right in the bottom of the ninth but their effort was never going to be enough to bring New York back into the contest.
Yankees’ starting pitcher CC Sabathia gave up seven hits and five runs in seven innings to take his third loss of the season. His counterpart from Tampa Bay David Price grabbed his third win of the season after allowing just three hits and one run in five
solid innings.
