New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 60
New York Yankees continued the good work in Game 2 of their three match series against their arch rivals; the New York Mets. Joe Girardi and his men secured a comfortable 9-1 win in Game 1 of the series and with momentum on their side, they dominated the
Mets in Game 2 as well to take an impassable 2-0 series lead.
Yankees’ pitching rotation once again played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash. Starting pitcher Phil Hughes pitched with great control and accuracy at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY as he allowed just six hits and two runs in six plus innings
to claim his sixth win of the season. Striking out batters at regular intervals, Hughes created all sorts of problems for the Mets’ batting lineup.
Relief pitcher Boone Logan, Cory Wade, Rafael Soriano and Clay Rapada all had a great time on the mound as they combined to toss up two scoreless innings. For the Mets, Dillon Gee also had a decent time on the mound as he allowed five hits and three runs
in seven solid innings but he was unfortunate to end up on the losing side.
"Right now we're on a nice little run," Teixeira said. "Starting pitching has been the key."
"It's nice to keep it going," Hughes said. "I relied on my fastball a lot and I think that's what's been working overall."
"I didn't think he was quite as sharp as he was in Detroit, but I thought he battled his rear end off," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Made some big pitches when he had to. I thought he did a really good job for us."
"They have a lot of power up and down that lineup. We don't," David Wright said.
Alex Rodriguez singled to centre in the first inning to put New York on the board. Mark Teixeira homered to right in the sixth inning to restore Yankees’ one run lead. Outfielder Curtis Granderson also made his presence felt as he smacked a solo home run
to right in the eighth inning to shutout the Mets.
