New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 63
After securing a comfortable a comfortable 3-0 win in Game 1 of a three match series against the Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees were looking to continue the good work in the next game to take an impassable 2-0 series lead.
Joe Girardi and his men did exactly that at Turner Field in Atlanta, Georgia on June 12 as they outclassed the Braves in finer details of the game to complete another outstanding series win. With their incredible victory over Atlanta, the Yankees improved
their record to 36-25 and extended their winning streak to five games.
Ace C.C. Sabathia played a big part in deciding the outcome of the clash as he allowed just four runs in seven solid innings. Striking out six batters, he created all sorts of problems for the Braves’ batting lineup. The left hander used his fastballs and
sliders extremely effectively to keep Braves on the defensive.
"It means a lot," Rodriguez said. "It's very special. This game is very, very difficult. If you're not going to enjoy these great moments, then it's not any fun. Lou Gehrig is not only one of the all-time greats, but he's one of ours."
"I almost felt like it was a swing for the team," Rodriguez said. "I felt like everybody needed that hit. We've all been waiting for it, but it definitely feels good to pick up our big man CC and to give our team a win."
Relief pitcher Clay Rapada and Rafael Soriano also made their presence felt as they combined to toss up two scoreless innings, helping New York hold on to a slim two run lead. Braves’ starter Mike Minor had a memorable time on the mound as he conceded just
one run in seven plus innings but he was unfortunate to end up on the losing side. Reliever Jonny Venters took the loss after he allowed three hits and four runs.
After the Braves took the early lead, slugger Alex Rodriguez smacked a grand slam to left in the eighth inning to put Yankees on the board. Outfielder Nick Swisher belted a two run home run to ensure New York reach home safely.
