New York Yankees 2012 regular season review- Part 68
With momentum on their side, the New York Yankees continued their dominant form in the finale of a three match series against the Washington Nationals. Executing their game plan to perfection, the Yankees secured a comfortable 4-1 win over the Nationals
to complete a deserving series sweep. It will not be wrong to say that the Yankees exploited the conditions at Nationals Park brilliantly on June 17 as they stretched their winning streak to nine games. Manager Joe Girardi was also very pleased with what he
saw from his men.
Starting pitcher Ivan Nova played a big part in deciding the outcome of the contest as he allowed just seven hits and one run in seven plus solid innings to lay the foundations of another impressive Yankees’ victory. Striking out batters at regular batters,
he kept pressure on the Nationals for most part of the game. Relief pitcher Boone Logan had a decent time on the mound and closer Rafael Soriano pitched the perfect ninth to save his 13th game of the season.
"When you're playing as well as we are, no matter what the situation is, you feel like you're going to get it done," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
"I think that's the one good thing that came this weekend," said first baseman Adam LaRoche. "That's about as close to a playoff atmosphere as you're going to get. ... You get the place packed, people going crazy and obviously it draws a lot of media attention.”
"What really concerns me is we've got to get Zim going," Washington manager Davey Johnson said. "We've got to get Zim to a happy place."
For the Nationals, starter Edwin Jackson put up a fine show as he allowed just two runs in six innings but he ended up taking his fourth loss of the season. Mark Teixeira put Yankees on the board in the first inning as he hit a sacrifice fly to centre. Curtis
Granderson and Robinson Cano hit back to back home runs to help New York claim a vital 301 lead. Andruw Jones also made a useful contribution in the seventh inning.
