New York Yankees' relief pitcher Rafael Soriano opts out of contract – MLB Update
New York Yankees' relief pitcher Rafael Soriano opted out of his current $35 million three year contract and decided to become a free agent.
“I'm not surprised because (agent) Scott Boras told me he was confident he could get him 15 times four (years), $60 million. If that’s the case, it would be a good deal for Soriano, I hope that’s what’s real in the marketplace,” Yankees' president Randy Levine told the media.
With this recent development, the Yankees and Soriano both seem quite pleased. Yankees know that they now can bring another potential player if Soriano leaves. On the other hand, Soriano will be getting another handsome contract if he tries to see the potential teams who want his aggressive plays.
“He wasn’t certain on what he is going to do,” Yankees' general manager Brian Cashman said last week.
Earlier Soriano said on his decision of opting out of contract, “I never make promises as to what the free-agent market might bear.”
Soriano, who finished this Major League Baseball season with 42 saves, knows his worth and is now looking for a big contract. There is also a possibility that the Yankees can re-sign him with another lucrative deal.
He is a talented player and possesses large Major League experience. He started his career from the Seattle Mariners’ platform and now has developed himself as a good role player in the Yankees roster.
After playing in the Mariners’ franchise for almost four years, Soriano went onto play for the Atlanta Braves and Tampa Bay Rays. He came into the Yankees in 2011 and signed a three year deal.
Experts believe that this is a healthy sign for Soriano and for the Yankees. The Yankees were ousted by Detroit Tigers in American League Championship Series and could not go further into the World Series.
As the Yankees lost to the Tigers, they started to think as how they can rebuild their team with given resources. Though the Yankees are not shopping any players but experts believe that in coming days, they will be seriously thinking to upgrade their current roster with some more young players.
