New York Yankees’ Carsten Charles Sabathia struggles at a crucial time – MLB Playoffs
The scorching heat inside-the-park weather, pressure of being top, demands of the spectators, the stress of the battle to be the best, has caused some inconceivable dilemmas for players of the teams, playing in the MLB playoffs. The players facing the most
stress are usually the pitchers from both squads.
This stress doubles especially when the competitors are old rivals and their starters have brilliant batting squads at their backs. A third game between Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees was a real war of nerves, not only inside the park but also outside
in the camps, where the managers’ minds were boiling with the heat of expectations.
A war between Sabathia and Justin Verlander was considered the most anticipated of the year, as Verlander managed to escape with stronger nerves than Sabathia.
CC Sabathia, who led the Yankees in severe times and troubles, failed to carry his perfect pitching in the most crucial playoff competition.
He allowed seven hits and four runs along with six walks, the most for him in a single game this season, in just over five innings. Sabathia received a good two runs at his back in the top of the first inning and somehow managed to restrict the Tigers to
no-score in his first two innings, but in the third, he destabilised and then kept struggling until Joe Girardi took him off.
The start of the third was not good at all for Sabathia, as Brandon Inge doubled on the second pitch and Sabathia tossed ball, two strikes, foul and three balls to allow a walk to Austin Jackson. The pressure of having Jackson and Inge on base sent the 31-year-old
into a struggling position. Left-hand hurler gave his first run on an RBI single to Ramon Santiago and then two pitches later allowed his second run to Miguel Cabrera, helping the Tigers tie the game at 2-all.
Looking at the fourth inning Sabathia tossed, it seemed as if he had gotten his momentum back. He took Magglio Ordonez on a ground out and Johnny Peralta on a fly out while striking-out Alex Avila to close down the inning without yielding any run.
However, the fifth became another struggling inning which he opened with a strike but immediately allowed a single and base run before finally allowing the Tigers leading run. Sabathia then allowed another run in the sixth inning before Girardi felt that
changing his starter is a better option than permitting more runs.
The left-hand pitcher consumed 106 pitches to toss just over five innings and gave way seven hits, making just three strikes with a 6.14 ERA. It was one of the worst performances Sabathia exhibited in this season. Having just a single starter was already
considered the only flaw in the Yankees side. Girardi now will have to rely on his other pitchers to start in a do-or-die situation game.
