New York Yankees’ Derek Jeter could play on Opening Day – MLB News
So far, it has been a strange and quiet offseason for the New York Yankees. A number of players have jumped the Good Ship Pinstripes faster than we can imagine. The Yankees are also going about their business like a small market club in an effort to cut down their expenses.
Yankees’ Captain Derek Jeter arrived at Yankee Stadium for his annual Turn 2 Foundation Holiday Express. He had a smile on his face and looked great. However, mostly important, he told his fans that he will be ready for the Opening Day game against the Boston Red Sox on April 1.
Yankees were the most successful club in the American League East Division last season as they finished at the top of the standings table. However, things did not go their way after Jeter suffered a severe injury in the American League Champion Series game against the Detroit Tigers.
“I’ve been walking out on this boot for about a week, 10 days, so, yeah, it was a tough five or six weeks, pretty much sitting on the couch with your foot elevated, but now I feel as though I am moving around pretty good,’’ he said.
“I played on it for quite some time. I guess I just pushed it a little too much and finally it broke. It’s not too often that I go down and stay down. I just couldn’t get up, and at that moment I knew that my season was over with,” Jeter added.
According to nypost, Jeter is expecting his injury to heal sooner rather than later. Right now, he has a walking boot on his left foot. Jeter admitted that he pushed his ankle a little too much and finally broke it.
He added that it was tough for him to go out with an injury after the Yankees were so close to the World Series title. Yankees’ Manager Jim Leyland is convinced that the veteran shortstop is on the road to recovery.
Reports have also surfaced that Jeter has put on a lot of weight while resting. It will be interesting to see if he can get back into shape before 2013 Spring Training.
