New York Yankees’ Derek Jeter inching closer to 3,000 hits – MLB News
Derek Jeter had two hits to achieve the rare accomplishment of 3,000 hits. Jeter’s hit on Thursday, July 7 has now enabled him to inch closer to the mark after injury resulted in his falling to the disabled-list a couple of weeks back.
However, the player is now genuinely looking forward to attain what remains a huge dream for baseball hitters. Unable to run and swing his bat, Jeter has had training sessions and side-matches to play to regain his fitness.
On Thursday, however, not only was the captain of the New York Yankees determined to win his team the game, but also hasten to arrive at the glory intensely sought.
Going on to become the 28th player having achieved the mark of 3,000 hits, Jeter put extra efforts on the game against Tampa Bay Rays to complete it.
With his first hit in the game, he was candid enough to admit that he wanted to do it quickly. "I'd be lying if I said I didn't," said Jeter.
"It's always good when you get a hit on your first at-bat," Jeter said. "Early on, I thought I'd have a few (hits), but (Rays pitcher Jeff) Niemann did a great job."
Jeter also admitted that the players were also in a hurry to see him reach this milestone. "A couple of guys mentioned, 'get three hits today'," Jeter said. "Today was the first time that they've really focused on that. After the game they said 'get a couple
of hits tomorrow.'
However, that is not going to come easy considering the fact that the pitchers are not always generous in helping you obtain glory.
The New York Yankees are now playing the four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays whose first game the Yankees lost by 5-1. While the next game is scheduled on Friday, there are a few things that the Yankees are planning to do.
Occupying the second spot in the MLB Power Ranking with 51 wins, the Yankees have fierce competitors like the Boston Red Sox to take on. Secondly, it’s Derek Jeter’s 3,000 hits that continue to draw attention.
During his 17 year career, Jeter has succeeded in winning five World Series rings, which in itself is a great record for a player of his calibre.
On Thursday, his cheering parents also came to the ground to see him make that final hit, but it did not transpire. Jeter will try to do it on Friday despite all the odds coming his way. The excitement is building as Jeter’s fans are eagerly waiting for
this historical moment.
