New York Yankees’ Derek Jeter needs 4-5 months to recover – MLB Update
New York Yankees’ Captain Derek Jeter had surgery performed on his ankle, reports a very well known sports website. Jeter suffered a fracture left ankle in Game 1 of the Yankees’ American League Championship Series against the Detroit Tigers.
A senior Yankees’ official confirmed Jeter had surgery performed on his left ankle. He further added that Jeter will require four to five months to recover from the injury. It will be interesting to see if Yankees’ Jeter can take part in the offseason workouts
and training sessions to become available for next year. It will be a tough loss for the Yankees if Jeter fails to recover before the start 2013 regular season.
"I think that's a reasonable goal, assuming everything goes smoothly," said orthopedic surgeon Dr. Steven Weinfeld.
"The thing that takes longer, that might have caused the timetable to get greater. When you have an ankle fracture, you have a boney injury and sometimes you have a boney injury combined with a ligament injury," Weinfeld said. "It's the ligament injury that
may prolong the course of recovery. They may have diagnosed a ligamentous injury at some point later on that may have changed the timetable."
The 38-year-old shortstop landed awkwardly while trying to stop a ground ball during Yankees- Tigers ALCS clash. Deter called for help instantly after feeling pain in his left ankle. Manager Joe Girardi and the Yankees’ physician rushed out to help Jeter
get off the field.
Jeter had an MRI scan done on his ankle after Yankees’ painful 4-6 loss to the Tigers. He officially is on the clock after undergoing surgery on Saturday. Foot and Ankle Specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, who treated several big names in sports industry, performed
the surgery in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Jeter was the only Yankees who was hitting well in the postseason. He went 9-for-27 in five playoff games before picking up the injury. Jeter was replaced by Eduardo Nunez for the final two games of Yankees’ series against the Tigers.
It will be interesting to see how long Jeter takes to fully recover from his surgery as the Yankees will be eager to see him back on the field.
