New York Yankees’ Derek Jeter starts training for the upcoming season – MLB News
With Spring Training starting in a couple of weeks, almost all the youngsters in New York Yankees team have started to train with Yankees’ coaching staff. Gathering at the team’s minor league complex, the Yankees are working hard to prepare them for the Spring Training session.
The oldest man in Yankees team, Derek Jeter has also reached the training camp like he has done in past twenty years. The 37-year-old produced decent performances last year as he had yet another 150 hit season. He will be hoping to continue his sensational run in the year 2012 as well before he calls it a career.
Although, officially the players report on February 25th, Jeter doesn’t have any time to waste. Yankees young shortstop Cito Culver was also reported to be with Jeter. Culver has been known to spend time with Jeter on daily basis to improve his game play. Jeter, who has represented Yankees for almost nineteen years, is a very respectable figure in Yankees team. According to Jeter', things haven’t changed too much in the last twenty years as he has always the first guy to come out on field for training. In an interview, Jeter’s first manager stated that the guy still has that same hunger to improve and get better.
"You see all these kids out here now," Jeter told the Post as he looked out over the perfectly manicured fields, where prospects such as infielder Dante Bichette (19) and outfielder Mason Williams (20) were working. "When I first came down here, it was just me. They didn’t do this when I started. I came on my own and I dragged my roommate down with me, R.D. Long. The only people down here were rehabbers. Then they started bringing people down and now they have this."
When Jeter started to train at the Yankees minor system facility in 1993, there weren’t even roofs over the batting stands. However, it has changed dramatically over the years and now it is one of the most advanced training facilities in Major League Baseball. However, one thing that hasn’t changed is Jeter’s attitude towards the game. He still has a great desire to learn new tricks and he wants to pass on those skills to the youngsters in minor league.
