New York Yankees: Golden Team of Major League Baseball
The New York Yankees is the most popular professional baseball team not only in Major League baseball but also in the American League. The team started its journey as New York Highlanders, when club moved from Baltimore Maryland, in 1903. The club originally
was formed in Baltimore with the name of Baltimore Orioles at the end of 1900, as National league did not allow the American League to make a team in New York due to political pressures.
The team has been playing in New York ever since they moved to the city. New York, Highlanders (know as Yankees, after New York Press sports Editor Jim Price nick named them the team as Yankees ) has won 27 World Series, 40 AL pennants, and 16 East Division
titles. The team also became popular with nick names like, The Bronx Bombers, The yanks, The Pin stripes and The Bronx Zoo.
Yankees made their first major victory in 1921 by winning AL pennant. This victory started a never ending era for Yankees, as they won their first World Series in 1923, until now they have won 27 World Series. 1920s was the period of The Yankees as they
possessed the best players of the world that include Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle.
Babe Ruth was the Yankees best ever player. He played from 1914 to 1935 and has been named as the best baseball player in the history. Ruth made history when hit 60 home-runs in one season, the record, broken by Hank Aaron in 1974. Ruth’s score of 714 homers
at his retirement was a record. During his tenure the Yankees won 7 pennants and four World Series.
Out of 34 managers for Yankees, Casey Stengel proved to be most successful. Stengel managed the team to win 7 World Series five of which was consecutive victories from 1949 to 1953. Casey was elected to Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966. The Yankees also have
had 54 Hall of the Fame awardees including Wade Boggs.
Like other games baseball teams are also in rivalry with one another. The most prominent of which are New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. The rivalry is the biggest and the best in American sports that their matches are on live telecasted via National television. Both
teams have met three times in field in 1904, 1949 and 1978. Red Sox was in a commanding position in 1904 and won the match, while 1949 was a lucky time for Yankees. The third was a tie game.
It is not that New Yorkers never declined. The year 1908 was the night-mare for the Yankees as for the first time in the history of the franchise they dropped to last place with a shameful record of 51-103. Kid Elberfeld the manager at that time for the
Yankees was dismissed after a horrible season.
Yankees’ motto of courage, tradition and heart made them very popular among the fans. Team wears Navy Blue, Red and White uniform. The interlocking NY sign on the front part of the team’s uniform is universally admired.
Yankees has the history to introduce the best and highest level players in the game. Team topped in every aspect from play ground to charity work. The players are always engaged to collect donations for disaster affected people in whole of the United States.
In 2002, a new network television channel was launched in order to create the positive image of the team and enhance their media coverage.
