New York Yankees’ Mariano Rivera to undergo throat surgery – MLB News
The New York Yankees’ star and one of the best closers in Major League Baseball, Mariano Rivera will undergo vocal cord surgery on Friday.
According to Fern Cuza, agent of the right-hander, surgery by no means will affect the performance of the pitcher.
Mariano Rivera, who celebrated his 42nd birthday on Tuesday, will be operated at the New York Presbyterian hospital where his polyps will be removed from his vocal cords. According to doctors, the player will not be able to speak for two weeks
and be allowed to go after a month.
Surgery is not a choice of Rivera, who seems little reluctant to undergo, but according to the condition of the tumour, the operation needed to be operated as soon as possible.
"I don't like surgery, but the sooner, the better," Rivera said Thursday during a charity event.
The Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman, when reached to talk about the issue, declined to give any statement, saying the issue is not related to baseball.
The oldest player in the current baseball circles, Rivera secured a career best 44 saves this past season. He also posted the baseball career record with 603 overall saves with a 1.91 ERA.
Rivera is in contract with the Yankees for the next year, in which he will get $15 million. He has shined in the baseball circles for many years, but he has never presented such a brilliant performance, which he has posted this year.
Yankees reached the American League Division Series, but lost to league rivals, Detroit Tigers 3-2 because of inconsistent performance of the batters. Throughout the season, the Yankees struggled with their starting pitching rotation, as there was no one
behind Carsten Charles Sabathia. However, Rivera offered his brilliant services in each game.
Yankees’ manager Brian Cashman refused to discuss, considering the issue out of the law. The Yankees however will be in great need of Rivera in 2012 season. Yankees will be looking to take as much benefit from Rivera as they can, as until now, Rivera has
not announced about his retirement. It will be a little too early to say, what Rivera decides about his future.
