New York Yankees’ Mark Prior to prolong stay in Florida to practice relief pitching – MLB Update
The New York Yankees is trying to finalise their squad card for the upcoming 2011 Major League Baseball season. Much to the pleasure of the fans, there were a lot of notable players who maintained their presence with the side. Many other prospects and Major
League Invitees were sent back to their respective places.
Mark Prior has been learning the tricks of being a successful relief pitcher and his job is set to become more challenging, as he will be sent to Class A Tampa to familiarise himself with the new role he has been assigned.
"I know there's still a lot of things I can improve on and work on, being in different situations," Prior said. "I think overall I surprised a lot of people that I can still hold my own at this level. I know I can."
Manager Joe Girardi is not going to move the ace anywhere until he feels it is necessary. The reason he gave in accordance to Prior’s stay in Florida was directed towards better weather conditions. The skipper has high hopes for the player and is striving
to promote him to Scranton-Wilkes-Barre. There is a good chance the ace may get the ball during the season, as a few months pass on and he gains enough experience to be an effective relief pitcher. Prior will have to work hard and learn the mechanics of being
a relief pitcher and the importance this position has for any team in the Major Leagues.
"It's hard to have a reliever who's a one or two-inning reliever if he can't go back-to-back," Girardi said. "He has thrown the ball well, and I think he's going to throw the ball better as time goes on, if he stays healthy."
There is no doubt there is room for Prior on the team, as the Yankees want to take a cautious route towards employing the best possible candidates on the scale. In the Major Leagues, numbers count for everything and that is what the new relief pitcher will
have to work hard at.
