New York Yankees: Mechanics maybe cause of Phil Hughes dip in velocity
The series at Fenway Park may be over but the New York Yankees may still be at an advantage here. The club has been trying to figure out why their starting pitcher is dipping out on his speedy throws.
The answer has not been determined yet but the pitching coach, Larry Rothschild, may have struck on to a lead.
Phil Hughes is still frustrated over his current condition and if his pace does not pick up, he may soon find himself out of the Yankees’ rotation. The player does not have a win in the season yet and he’s scheduled to take on the Baltimore Orioles at the
Yankees Stadium.
The player recently started working on his lower back in his latest bullpen session in Boston. The goal is simple, regain the lost velocity that has dampened his performance in recent fixtures.
"Even though I'm fairly confident it's more of an arm strength issue, I'm still trying to clean some things up in my delivery and hopefully get things back on track", said Hughes.
The work on his pitching came after extensive video research, he, and, Rothschild reviewed recently. The pitching coach spotted mechanical differences in the ball thrower’s lower back, which had a more deliberate role last season. The management at the clubhouse
is hoping there is a connection behind that anomaly and his dip in speed.
"It's impossible to tell," Hughes said. "If I knew the answer, I'd get on it as soon as possible. We're just trying to find anything we can to get things right again and get back on track".
The hurler has not reported any discomfort or pain, which is leading the Yanks to believe that the problem with the velocity is not health related. There has not been an indication from the club to send the player for a medical check up. The ace believes
that this would just be a waste of time.
"Not really", Hughes said. "I'd feel it if I was [hurt]. I don't really feel like it's an issue".
With a weak pitching rotation, the Yankees want Hughes back as soon as possible. Nobody knows though when that may happen.
