New York Yankees: Post season results - MLB 2011- Part 1
New York Yankees had done a remarkable job to reach the American League Championships. Miguel Cabrera along with Victor Martinez displayed some high quality hitting skills throughout the regular season to let the Yankeed make it to the World Series. Joe Girardi and his men were now looking to achieve similar results in their post season games against the American League Central title holder, Detroit Tigers.
In game one on September 30th, the Yankees looked in commanding form as they made their rivals run for their money. Asserting dominance over their opponents in almost all departments of the game, they were the better team by miles.
Robinson Cano was the star of the show as he batted with great control to hit a grand slam and drive in six runs. Rookie Ivan Nova also justified his selection as a pitcher as he pitched accurately into the ninth innings and the Yankees humbled the Tigers 9-3 to take 1-0 lead in the series.
It was a great performance by the Yankees' pitchers considering the depth of the Tigers' batting line-up. Victor Martinez, Detroit's designated hitter, had hit 12 home runs with an impressive batting average, coming into the post season.
"My goal is just to win it all. They put you third, so you want to do your job there. You don't want to let your manager down," Cano said. "I did my job today and hopefully I can continue doing it."
"I just wasn't sure how he was going to control his emotions," Joe Girardi said in a post game interview with the news reporter. "I didn't think he had his best stuff today and he still found a way to get outs. But I thought he pitched really well. He pitched to contact. ... I loved what he did today."
However, despite having the winning momentum on their side, the Yankees failed to live up their immense potential in the game two of the series and the Tigers battled back to level the series at 1-1.The Yankees certainly had their chances but they were unable to convert them, eventually paying the price. The Tigers, on the other hand, executed their game plan to perfection. Justin Verlander did a great job as a closer to hold off the Yankees in the ninth rally.
The Yankees put up a brave fight but they were unable to take advantage of their opponents' unforced errors. Socring twice in the ninth inning, they looked on course to another memorable win. Alex Avila, Detroit's catcher lost his balance while chasing two-out foul popup. The Yankees' manager, Joe Girardi, however, aimed to give improved performances in the upcoming games to cheer up their fans.
