New York Yankees: Regular season results – MLB April 2011
After giving very ordinary results during the spring season, the New York Yankees were hoping to yield positive results from their regular season campaign. Unable to handle pressure, they certainly had their problems against strong teams like Detroit Tigers.
Joe Girardi’s team aimed to adopt a very aggressive strategy throughout to get the best out of each player.
In their first three match series against Detroit Tigers, the Yankees shut the critics with some high quality baseball. Hammering their rivals 6-3 in game one of the series, they outplayed the Tigers in almost every department of the game. Curtis Granderson
hit a go ahead homer in the seventh inning to give his side complete control of the contest.
Yankees continued their excellent form in game two of the series as well, making quick work of the Tigers 10-6 to clinch the series. Although they were defeated in the final game, Joe Girardi was satisfied with the overall quality of their game-play throughout
the series.
New York made a decent start to their next series against the Minnesota Twins, emerging victorious 4-3 in a thrilling encounter in game one. Although they lost the track a bit in the second game, they finished on a high note by securing their second series
win of the month. After winning the rain shortened series, the Yankees went to Boston to face their arch rivals, the Red Sox.
Despite putting up a great fight in opening game of the three match series, the Yankees were outplayed by their opponents in finer details of the game. The pitching department had troubles as it conceded nine costly runs. Bouncing back brilliantly in game
two of the series, the Yankees managed to get very favourable results to level the series at 1-all.
Yankees then took on Baltimore Orioles in a three match series. Emerging victorious in each encounter, they elevated their game-play to an entirely new level. Making the most of their opportunities, the Yankees made the opposition run for their money. Russell
Martin displayed some high quality play as he drove in four runs and hit two homers.
"I'm healthy," Martin said. "I've been healthy since the beginning of the season, so it definitely is a good feeling. I feel like it's been a while."
"I saw him as a very productive player," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "I wasn't saying he was going to hit 30 homers and 120 RBIs, but I thought he'd be a productive player in our lineup, because he could do so many things."
The Yankees continued their impressive run against Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers, ending the month with an incredible 15-9 win-loss record.
