New York Yankees: Regular season results – MLB September 2011
New York Yankees had a decent start to the month of September as well as they defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-2 on September 1 to secure their first series victory of the month. Looking to bring more consistency into their game-play, the Yankees played hard
over the next few days, demolishing the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0.
CC Sabathia led the pitching department as he earned his 19th win of the season. Joe Girardi, Yankees’ manager, praised his team’s efforts and he advised them to learn from their mistakes. He further revealed that he has plans to reverse course
to go with six starters at least one more time through the rotation.
"I'm allowed to change my mind," Girardi explained. "We want to see it again. We liked what we saw from our guys.”
Yankees had a great start to their next series against the Baltimore Orioles as well as they clinched the opening two games to take a 2-0 lead in the four game series. However, they were unable to live up to the expectations in the following two games to
let the challenging team draw the series at 2-all. It was a very disappointing result for Joe Girardi and his men, considering the hard work they had put in the opening two games.
Under criticism, the Yankees failed to produce any noticeable performances in the series against the Los Angeles Angels, losing both of their opening two encounters. A 6-0 victory in game two, the Angels displayed some high quality baseball as they took
the Yankees for a good run for their money. However, it was the Yankees who had the last laugh as they clinched a nail biting 6-5 encounter to salvage some of their lost pride.
The leading American League West team came back strongly in their next series against the Seattle Mariners. Outshining the Mariners in almost all aspects of the game, they secured their second series victory in August 2011. Charlie Furbush pitched with great
control as he allowed only three runs and struck-out six in just over five innings. Joe Girardi was very pleased with the way Furbush conducted himself on the battle field.
"I don't know if we'll ever see it again. That's how much of an accomplishment this is that he has done. Simply remarkable," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "This is a guy who I believe is the best closer that's ever been in the game and I've had the
fortune of catching him, coaching him and managing him and it's a treat."
The Yankees ended the month strongly with victories over Tampa Bay Rays, Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins.
