New York Yankees’ Sergio Mitre’s departure marks arrival of Chris Dickerson and Kevin Millwood
The New York Yankees made two changes in their team recently. The first being that they signed free agent Kevin Millwood in a minor-league deal, this was followed by them trading their pitcher Sergio Mitre to the Milwaukee Brewers for Chris Dickerson, an
outfielder.
Chris Dickerson’s performance in 2010 was terrible, to say the least. He displayed no sense of plate discipline or power on the field. But that being said, he still is excellent at centre field defense and can add a bit to the team’s offense as well. If
all goes well, Dickerson should be able to perform well keeping in mind the performances he gave before 2010. Dickerson has a batting average of .271.
He is expected to steal some bases and reach a solid rate when playing for the Yankees. It is possible that he will replace Greg Golson, which would mean that the outfield would be secure and he might surprise everyone with his speed and defense. Seeing
how Mitre is out of the picture now, Dickerson can replace him a maybe be better for the Bronx Bombers.
Sadly, or maybe not sadly, since many Yankees were not that fond of Mitre, his time with the Pinstripes has finished. There was always speculation that Giradi was very fond of Mitre and he would not let him leave them team but all those myths are put to
rest with this latest move by the Yankees management. Mitre is an average player that can put up runs every once in a while, but he fails in tense situation where the team needs scores fast. In his time with the Yankees he has a 5.03 ERA in 106 innings within
12 starts in the past two seasons. He comes off as a middle reliever who can pitch ground balls in low leverage situations.
This trade may be one of the few trades that are a good deal for both sides. Mitre was many at times seen as the ‘odd one out’ from among the Pin Stripes. He really did not have any place with Ivan Nova, Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia filling out the spots.
Granderson is currently injured and there is a chance that he might end up on the disable list when the season starts. Keeping this in mind, Dickerson would give the Bronx Bombers a bit of security and depth until Granderson’s return.
As for the Milwaukee Brewers, they have Shaun Marcum and Zack Greinke, who are both injured. Mitre may not be as good as the duo but he can pitch a few inning without giving too many runs
There are two possible reasons as to why the Bronx Bombers decided to sign on Kevin Millwood. First being that they are trying to have more depth in their pitching and second that they just wanted to line up players ‘in case of emergency’. This deal is not
risky for the Yankees, exactly like the ones that were made with Colon, Garcia and Prior. Millwood was 4-16 last season with an ERA of over 5. He leads the opponent into a false complacency and eats up innings at best. Let’s hope the Yanks tap Millwood and
polish him to be more.
