New York Yankees: Spring season results - MLB 2011
New York Yankees had a very ordinary start to their spring season campaign as they were crushed 4-5 in their first game against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Yankees looked very rusty in that game as they committed a large number of unforced errors to let
the opposition get out of jail at several occasions.
However, the Yankees improved their game play significantly in the second match against the Phillies as they completed outclassed their rivals 7-3 in a fairly one sided contest. Ivan Nova showed great poise and promise as the New York Yankees came out on
top in all aspects of the game.
The Yankees were hoping for strong training season results ahead of their regular season campaign. However as it turned out, they managed to win only two out of their first eight games. The New Yorkers struggled against better sides like Detroit Tigers,
Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox. Although they came out victorious in a game against Houston Astros, the overall quality of their game play was not satisfactory by any means. A.J. Burnett was the stand out performance against Houston as he pitched with
deadly accuracy to restrict the opposition side to a very small total.
"It was fun out there to face some hitters, just throw strikes, just go out there and go pitch by pitch," Burnett said. "That's what we're working on: not worrying about what happens if you throw a ball or what I did wrong if I miss by 4 inches."
"I thought pretty good," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Burnett's performance. "Some adjustments in his mechanics, he threw strikes, got some groundballs."
After making a forgettable start to the spring season, the Yankees turned things around for themselves with four consecutive victories from March 6 to March 9. Hammering the Phillies 7-1, they seemed to be back to their very best as everybody played their
part in an impressive victory.
Avenging their defeat, the Yankees then outshined Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 to improve their win-loss record to 6-5. However, the Yankees experienced another huge dip in their form as they lost six straight games, causing panic within their unit. Team Manager
Joe Girardi was very disappointed with the efforts from his players as a lot of scoring opportunities were wasted in some of the games.
Looking to restore some of the lost pride, the Yankees elevated their game to a higher level against Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays, giving their fans something to cheer about. They ended the season on a positive note as they outplayed Toronto Blue
Jays, Houston Astros, Pittsburgh Pirates and Detroit Tigers in four out of their five outings to improve their win-loss record to 13-14.
