New York Yankees and Cincinnati Reds rained out in second fixture – MLB News
The second of the three-game interleague series between the American League’s New York Yankees and the National League’s Cincinnati Reds has been postponed until Wednesday due to heavy rain, at the Great American Ball Park, Ohio on Tuesday, June 21.
Now the game will be played tomorrow on June 22 at the same venue, however the batting and pitching line up may be changed.
In the first outing of the series, the Yankees clobbered the Reds 5-3 with some exceptional performance of their batter, as they scored four early runs in the top of the first inning and their pitcher Ivan Nova. He allowed just one run and struck-out seven
batters over his eight innings to take the Yankees winning surge to nine in last 11 games.
After receiving their fourth defeat, the Reds were hopeful to nip their losing surge as they have employed their reliable starter Johnny Cueto. Though Cueto was struggling with his neck due to soreness and the Reds were having trouble in devouring this blow,
many speculations were swirling in the league that he would make this game.
He has allowed just one RBI over 14 innings in his last two starts. Overall, he has 4-2 record with 1.68 ERA in eight starts.
The Reds were struggling with the bat and therefore they have made some changing in their batting rotation but now they will have to wait for one more day to test their new technique. After the Reds lost their last game due to some disappointing performance
of their batters, their manager Dusty Baker said,
"We're having a hard time getting batters on base -- in any inning -- and getting their pitchers into a stretch right away. We've got to come up with a way to get one or two guys on right away."
The Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi also made some changes in the batting line after knowing the unbelievable position of the Reds’ starter. Girardi gave a rest to Brett Gardner and employed Andrew Jones to make some variation in batting line-up. If the game
was not postponed due to rain, there might be a chance for Jones to improve his batting line that was .077.
As the Yankees are among the American League leaders with 42 wins in this season and they have won nine of their last 11 games, they found it a perfect chance to test their new starter Brian Gordon. The 32-year-old joined the Yankees on June 14 after opting
out his Minor League contract with the Phillies, which he has signed in 2009.
Gordon was to make his second start after he won his first game against the Texas Rangers on June 16, in which he gave just two runs, allowing seven hits, walking three and getting three strike-outs.
