New York Yankees annihilated by Baltimore Orioles 3-8 – MLB Update
New York Yankees were humiliated by the Baltimore Orioles 3-8 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Sunday, September 2 in the finale of their three match series.
Orioles made the most of scoring opportunities to put their rivals under immense pressure. In some ways, the offence has fuelled Baltimore’s run to the top of the American League East Division standings.
Matt Wieters and Mark Reynolds, in particular, have displayed some top quality hitting skills this season and it will be interesting to see if the Orioles can maintain their excellent offensive form to make it to the playoffs.
"They pitch, they hit. The bottom line is they beat us and we'll see them again in a few days," Derek Jeter said of the Orioles.
Yankees, on the other hand, struggled to score runs at a hitter friendly ballpark. The pitching rotation was also unable to execute their game plan and the Orioles took complete advantage of the situation. Phil Hughes gave up eight hits and five runs in
five way-ward innings to take his 12th loss of the season.
Manager Joe Girardi used seven relief pitchers to complete rest of the four innings but that did not have any impact on the result of the game.
"I thought that was Hughes' guy to get out," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "He didn't do it."
For Baltimore, starting pitcher Chris Tillman used his fastballs and sliders effectively, giving up just two runs in three innings. Randy Wolf was awarded with the win for pitching three plus effective innings.
"Wolfie, coming in and bringing some calmness -- whatever you want to call -- to the game was big," Manager Buck Showalter said in a post game interview.
Chris Dickerson homered to right in the second inning to put Yankees on the board. Nick Swisher singled to left in the fifth inning to restore Yankees’ two run lead but the Orioles were too hot to handle on Sunday as they came back from behind to snatch
a memorable win. Mark Reynolds hit two home-runs to play a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash.
