New York Yankees annihilated by Detroit Tigers 2-7 – MLB Update
New York Yankees were annihilated by the Detroit Tigers 2-7 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Monday, August 6 in the opening game of their four match series.
Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander looked in top form on the mound as he made quick work of Yankees’ hitting line up to lay the foundations of an impressive Tigers victory. Verlander, who won the Most Valuable Player Award and Cy Young Award in 2011, has not shown
any signs of slowing down this season.
Asserting his dominance over Yankees’ offence, Verlander struck-out a season high 14 batters. He nailed Mark Teixeira and Ichiro Suzuki, fanning both three times each. He also struck-out his former team-mate Curtis Granderson for the first three times.
Showing great composure and control, the right hander gave up just two runs in eight solid innings to help the Tigers establish complete control over the contest. Only Yankees’ captain Derek Jeter and Granderson managed to get a hit off him in the fifth
inning.
"He shut us down," Jeter said. "A lot of time great pitchers get a little attitude when they have guys on base and they bear down. He did that."
Yankees’ starter Ivan Nova, on the other hand, struggled to keep Tigers’ quiet as he gave up 11 hits and seven earned runs in just over five innings to take his sixth loss of the season. Yankees, who have struggled to give decent results after the All Star
Break, will be looking to regroup themselves to turn things around in Game 2.
"Every pitcher goes through it," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "You're going to go through struggles. For the most part, the kid has been pretty good for us but right now, he's struggling. He'll find his way out. Verlander, as good as he is, goes through
struggles. He's not 20-0 this year."
After Manager Jim Leyland decided to send Verlander to the dugout, the crowd at Comerica Park stood up to give him standing ovation. Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder also made the most of available opportunities with a home-run each.
