New York Yankees are unlikely to offer Torii Hunter two year contract – MLB Update
Former Los Angeles Angels’ outfielder Torii Hunter may be headed to a new American League team but it seem New York will not be an ideal landing spot for him. According to a leading sports website, the outfielder is looking for a two year $26 million deal,
which could put the Yankees out of the running.
Hunter had a decent time on the plate last season as he hit .313 with 16 home-runs and 92 RBI’s. In addition to being a great hitter, Hunter has unmatchable defensive skills that make him one of the most wanted outfielders in the game.
Although Hunter had a solid 2012 season, a source claimed the Yankees may not be able to offer him a two year contract. It seems Hunter’s desire for a multi-year deal at 37-years-old has turned off the Yankees, who are now considering other options to strengthen
up their batting line-up.
According to a source, the Detroit Tigers are the front runner as far as signing Hunter is concerned. Texas Rangers, Atlanta Braves and the Boston Red Sox have also shown interest in signing Hunter but as of now the Tigers are making the strongest push for
the outfielder.
“I’d say there’s little shot,” the source said, pointing to the Yankees’ refusal to offer a two-year deal.
Yankees could have another vacancy at catcher if Russell Martin, who is testing the open market, signs a contract with some other team. Reports surfaced on Monday that the Yankees are interested in signing former Ranger Mike Napoli.
“The process is going to determine the time frame,” Martins’ agent Matt Colleran said. “He loved everything about New York and he still does. With the ability to talk to other teams, now it’s all part of the process. Once he has all his info, he’ll decide
what he wants to do.”
With Nick Swisher also seeking a multi-year deal in the open market, the Yankees have a possible vacancy in right field as well. Free agent Ichiro Suzuki, who was acquired in a trade last season, remains a possibility to fill that gap.
