New York Yankees batter hard Arizona Diamondbacks 4-2 – MLB Recap
The New York Yankees defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-2 in the first game of their three-match regular series encounter on Tuesday, April 16 at Yankees Stadium in New York City.
Yankees’ batting and pitching lineup showed great resilience during the entire game as they never allowed the Diamondbacks to take control of the game.
They played as one unit and showed that why they are considered one of the most talented teams in the Major League.
“You think about that being a song that's a tradition there -- it's special to Fenway Park and the people of Boston," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We're behind them. Put the baseball teams aside; we want to be there for them."
Yankees starter Ivan Nova played wonderfully on the mound and provided the Yankees great defense. He pitched five innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. Though he allowed two earned runs but at the same time he struck out six Diamondbacks batters on
5.59 ERA.
Along with pitchers, the Yankees hitters also played a vital role in their team’s win. Second baseman Robinson Cano also did a good job on the plate as he scored one runs and ran for three RBIs on his persistent slugging .653 percentage.
"That was one of the days that you always want to be in the big leagues to play," said Cano, who was named after the Hall of Famer by his father, Jose. "That guy opened the door for us. It's amazing to get a chance to wear 42 that day."
Third baseman Kevin Youkilis scored one run on his four at bats while shortstop Eduardo Nunez ran for an RBI on his .304 slugging percentage.
On the other hand, the Diamondbacks certainly played very poor in this particular game. Their pitchers and batters looked tired on the field as they never able to do anything in response to Yankees’ constant hammering.
Brandon McCarthy started the game for the Diamondbacks and received some heavy hitting as he allowed three runs and nine hits on his four innings’ spell.
Closer Brad Ziegler also disappointed with his outing as he allowed one run and two hits on his 2.00 ERA.
