New York Yankees’ batting lineup fails yet again – MLB Update
The batting line-up, once again, failed to find scoring ways against the Detroit Tigers’ inspired pitching rotation as New York Yankees suffered their third straight loss in American League Championship Series.
Curtis Granderson, Robinson Cano, Russell Martin, Ichiro Suzuki and Mark Teixeira all looked short of answers against Tigers’ hard throwing ace Justin Verlander.
Tigers’ starting pitcher Verlander took a shut-out into the ninth inning to set up a comfortable win at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday evening.
"We will see how he is tomorrow and we'll see what we have tomorrow, which will determine what we do," Girardi said.
"It started to tighten up on me in the third. It wasn't too bad and I was trying to stay in the game, but they decided with the way things were going to go to the bullpen," said Phil Hughes after allowing three hits in three innings. "I wanted to stay in.
It wasn't so bad that I couldn't pitch."
Raul Ibanez, who displayed some top quality hitting skills in Game 1, was struck-out by Tigers’ relief pitcher Phil Coke in the ninth inning. With Coke’s second save of the post-season, Detroit took a commanding 3-0 series and they find themselves in an
excellent position to sweep the Yankees.
Overall Coke allowed two hits to Teixeira and Robinson Cano, with Cano snapping his draught of 29 at-bats without a hit.
Delmon Young had another decent outing with the bat as he homered in the fourth inning to break the deadlock. Miguel Cabrera doubled Tigers lead to 2-0 with a double to deep right centre in the fifth inning.
"I knew I hit it hard enough, but we weren't in Yankee Stadium, so I had to wait an extra 30 feet for it to land," Young said.
Yankees’ shortstop Eduardo Nunez belted a home-run to left in the ninth to snap a scoreless streak by Detroit’s starter of 30 plus innings. The previous such record was set by Oakland in 1974 with a streak of 29 shut-out innings.
Verlander nearly became the first pitcher in 24-years to pitch successive shut-outs in the post-season but Nunez’s home-run helped Yankees avoid the shut-out.
