New York Yankees beat Atlanta Braves 6-2 in series opener – MLB Update
New York Yankees beat Atlanta Braves 6-2 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Monday, June 18 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Joe Girardi and company have looked in outstanding form over the last couple of weeks. Yankees’ win against the Braves on Monday evening has extended their winning streak to 10 games, which is also their longest since May 2005. If the Yankees can sweep Atlanta in this series, their winning streak of 12 games will be the longest in club’s history since 1965.
However, the fact all of their ten wins have come against National League teams with winning records. Showing great composure and pressure handling abilities, the Yankees swept the red hot Washington Nationals in the previous series.
"I don't think you're ever satisfied. I think when you become satisfied you can go backwards," Yankees' manager Joe Girardi said. "Guys always feel that they can do more, and that's the bottom line."
"We're finding ways," he said. "We're doing a good job."
Yankees’ ace C.C. Sabathia had an excellent time on the mound to win for the ninth time this season. Striking out 10, he improved to 22-8 lifetime against National League teams. Sabathia beat the Braves at Turner Field last week as well and he will be looking to continue his dominance over the National League Central team.
"It hasn't all been blowouts," Sabathia said. "It's coming together for us."
"You don't want to be the guy who messes up," he further added.
With the Braves leading 2-0 in the fifth inning, it looked very tough for the Yankees to find an entry back into the contest. Russell Martin hit a ground rule double to left to keep New York’s hopes alive.
Derek Jeter singled to centre in the fifth and Mark Teixeira homered to left in the sixth to help the Yankees come back from behind to snatch an impressive victory. Robinson Cano hit a mighty 419 feet home run in the eight to end the game on a strong note for his team.
