New York Yankees beat Baltimore Orioles 3-2 in series finale – MLB Update
The New York Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles 3-2 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Monday, August 29 to win the rain-shortened four-game series 2-1.
Mark Teixeira scored an RBI single while Nick Swisher launched a home-run to post three run lead until the fourth inning. Mark Teixeira doubled to deep right-field, scoring Curtis Granderson in the first inning. Nick Swisher hammered a stunning home-run
to right for two runs in the fourth inning.
"Obviously when you're in that situation, you want to be the guy to try and step up," Swisher said. "I know everyone in the line-up is stepping their game up a little bit."
Freddy Garcia made a strong comeback after three weeks from right index injury. He allowed only a single run, walked one and struck-out four batters to get his fourth straight win. Garcia worked six innings and improved his record to 11-7 with a 3.09 ERA.
This performance will defiantly be a positive sign for Carsten Charles Sabathia, who was feeling alone in the pitching depth.
Baltimore stroked only two hits against Garcia. First was touched in the first innings by Adam Jones and second was a homer by Mark Reynolds in the fifth. It was the first home-run, Garcia allowed in his last eleven starts since June 7.
"He hung one slider to Mark Reynolds and gave us six great innings," Girardi said. "I would have signed up for that if someone would have asked what we were going to get from him tonight. He was excellent."
Rafael Soriano worked a scoreless seventh inning and David Robertson gave away a home-run to J.J. Hardy in the eighth inning. However, Mariano Rivera completed a solid ninth to get his 34th save of the season.
Orioles’ starter Alfredo Simon gave away three runs on four hits, walked two and struck-out six over seven innings but lost his seventh outing of the season. His 4-7 record with a 4.26 ERA is one of the lowest of the season. Closer Mike Gonzalez scattered
only a single hit over his two innings in the last session of the game.
Yankees now have entered into the eighties and have a really good chance to be a part of the exciting post season.
