New York Yankees beat Cleveland Indians 6-4 – MLB News
New York Yankees continued their excellent winning streak, as they edged past the Cleveland Indians 6-4 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Wednesday, June 5 in the finale of their three-match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball
regular season.
Credit should be given to the Yankees for executing their game plan to perfection in all three games of the series. Joe Girardi and company secured a comfortable 7-4 win in Game 1 of the series and they prevailed in a thrilling
encounter in Game 2. With their win on Wednesday evening, the Yankees completed a deserving series sweep in the American League East Division. It will be interesting to see if they can continue their good run to replace the Boston Red Sox at the top of the
AL East standings table.
Starting pitcher CC Sabathia, who had been struggling to control his fastballs and sliders since the start of the season, finally showed some signs of form, as he allowed just four runs in his first complete game of the season.
Striking out batters at regular intervals, Sabathia improved his record to 6-4.
"I'm still trying to get a feel for the game," in the fifth, Sabathia said. "Probably (would have noticed in) another inning or two."
"We really needed it," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I didn't really want to use Mo, but I would have with two outs in the ninth."
"He was really spotting it up," Cleveland's Nick Swisher said of his former New York teammate. "I mean, you go into the batter's box and you're used to seeing 94-95 mph, and all of a sudden, you're seeing these back door breaking
balls coming at you, just -- bam -- right on the corner."
For the Indians, starter Corey Kluber paid the ultimate price for his errors on the mound, giving up seven hits and six runs in just six innings to take his fourth loss of the season. Designated hitter, Travis Hafner, provided
the Yankees with a dream start by smacking a two-run home run to right in the first inning to put his side on the board. Outfielder Brett Gardner homered to right in the second inning to stretch the lead to 6-0, which proved to be sufficient to overcome the
Indians.
