New York Yankees beat Cleveland Indians 6-4 – MLB Update
New York Yankees extended their winning streak to four games as they beat Cleveland Indians 6-4 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Tuesday, June 26 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Chris Stewart reached on infield single to third in the second and Nick Swisher scored to put the Yankees 1-0 ahead. Centre-fielder Curtis Granderson also made his presence felt with a two run single to left-centre as the Yankees continued to ride their
luck.
Alex Rodriguez homered to left in the seventh to help New York take complete control of the situation and Stewart hit a sacrifice fly to left in the eighth to deny the Indians any chance of coming back in the game.
"There were a lot of miss-hit balls, not real comfortable swings, which is exactly what you want, and somehow, you're four runs down on the board," Indians’ starting pitcher Justin Masterson said. "But I feel we were doing a lot better than the way that
looked."
Johnny Damon’s RBI single to centre in the bottom of the ninth put the Indians on the board. With bases loaded, Jose Lopez hit a three run home-run to reduce Yankees’ lead to 6-4 but the effort was never going to be enough.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Phil Hughes allowed just six hits in eight solid innings.
"If it's a great play, how come you're not showing it on the board for the fans?" Manny Acta said. "We were discussing that with the umpires, but, what can you do?"
"That's the first time I've seen an all left-handed lineup before and I'm pretty comfortable with my fastball going in on lefties," Hughes said.
The win will be of great importance for the Yankees who are now four games ahead of Baltimore Orioles at the top of American League East Division standings table. New York’s bullpen has remained their biggest strength since the start of the season.
Yankees’ pitcher Phil Hughes in particular, has the ability to pitch effectively under pressure, which has allowed them to win low scoring games. New York will be looking to become even more competitive as they start to build up some winning momentum.
