New York Yankees beat Detroit Tigers 5-1 in series decider – MLB Update
New York Yankees showed great composure and mental toughness as they beat Detroit Tigers 5-1 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Sunday, June 3 in the decisive finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Derek Jeter, once again, made the difference as he homered to right in the first to give the Yankees 1-0 lead. Mark Teixeira also had a decent time on the plate as he hit a sacrifice fly to centre in the same inning to double Yankees’ lead to 2-0. Alex Rodriguez
hit his ninth home run of the season in the third to improve his average to .284.
For the Tigers, Prince Fielder displayed some high class hitting skills, hitting a home run to right in the fourth to reduce the deficit to 1-3. However, the Yankees continued to score runs freely. Robinson Cano tripled to deep right in the fifth to give
his team a handsome 5-1 lead that lasted till the end of the game.
Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander looked a bit out of sorts as he struggled to get strikeouts with his fastballs. He allowed five runs, including three earned, on nine hits in just over six innings.
"I was uncomfortable right from the start, because the pitches that I practice every day weren't getting me strikes," Verlander said. "To get a strike, I had to come over more of the plate than I normally do, and that's a big problem against that lineup."
"It feels great. The big thing here has been pitch count and not going very deep into games," Yankees’ starting pitcher Hughes said. "My fastball was staying more true, had some good life on it. I just felt a lot better overall."
With their win against the Tigers, New York also improved their record to 29-24. Throughout their series against Detroit, Joe Girardi and company made the most of available opportunities.
Although the Tigers secured a narrow 4-3 win in the second game, they were unable to ride their luck in the finale and the Yankees dominated them in almost all departments to earn a deserving series victory.
