New York Yankees beat Kansas City Royals 7-4 in series opener – MLB Updates
The New York Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals 7-4 in the first game of the three-game series at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City on Monday, August 15 to take a 1-0 lead.
Yankees scored two runs in the top of the second, three in the sixth and one each in the seventh and the eighth inning. The Royals played only one good inning that was the fifth in which they scored three runs. Besides this, they scored one run more in the
seventh inning.
Brett Gardener and Derek Jeter each scored an RBI in the second inning. Jeter touched three hits on four at-bats and scored three RBIs. Gardner scored two RBIs and Mark Teixeira scored one RBI.
Yankees’ starter Allan James Burnett, who was winless since signing an $82.5-million contract with New York Yankees in August, tossed just over five innings and gave away three runs and one walk to get his ninth win after a long time. He also struck-out
two batters.
"It makes you feel a part of it," Burnett said after his first victory since June 29, a stretch of seven mostly miserable starts. "There are a lot of things to keep you not too content, but yeah, it feels good."
Despite his bad record in August, Burnett did not allow the Royals to make any considerable hit.
"It probably feels really good," Girardi said. "He's thrown some games I thought we could have got him wins and we didn't, and that's frustrating because I think you always ask yourself as a player, 'Could I have done a little more and maybe kept them off
the scoreboard?'"
Boone Logan worked less than one scoreless inning. Rafael Soriano gave the fourth run to the Royals over his single inning spell. David Robertson and Mariano Rivers each carried their great class and tossed scoreless innings to help the Yankees won their
73rd game of the season.
Royals’ starter Felipe Paulino lost his fifth game of the season, allowing five runs on eight hits and walking five batters in just over five innings. Tim Collins and Everett Teaford each gave one run over their short spells. Blake Wood was the only pitcher
who managed to save him from runs.
Miguel Cabrera and Billy Butler each scored two RBIs for the Royals.
The Yankees are now 73-46 in 2011 regular season while Royals are far behind with just 50 wins.
