New York Yankees beaten by Boston Red Sox 2-3 in series finale – MLB Update
New York Yankees lost to the Boston Red Sox 2-3 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Sunday, July 29 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
In some ways it was a huge win for the Red Sox, who have been fighting hard over the last few weeks to stay in the playoffs race. Right now, they are 51-51, sitting at the bottom of the American League East Division standings table.
However, with Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles also struggling to give consistent results, the Red Sox still have a chance to make it through to the post-season.
Manager Bobby Valentine will be extremely pleased with what he saw from the Red Sox on Sunday. After losing the series opener, the Red Sox needed to win the next two games to build on some much needed confidence and that is exactly what they did.
Yankees, on the other hand, will be disappointed with their effort in a game that could have been won quite easily. Yankees’ offence, in particular, failed to make the most of available opportunities.
"We didn't really have a lot of opportunities," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said in a post game interview. "Doubront was tough on us, and he's been tough on us all three of his starts."
Only Russell Martin rose to the occasion as he homered to right in the seventh inning to reduce Boston’s lead 2-1. Martin’s single to centre in the eighth inning levelled score 2-2.
However, apart from him none of the hitters could come up with decent scoring shots. Starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda pitched eight effective innings but he could not stop the Red Sox from earning a well deserved victory. Allowing seven hits and just two runs,
Kuroda lowered his ERA to 3.28.
"We'll take bloops. We need them," Valentine said.
"Usually with this offense you're going to get some good results, but it just didn't happen today," Kuroda said through a translator.
Relief pitcher David Robertson took the loss after he allowed the winning single to Pedro Ciriaco in the tenth.
