New York Yankees beaten by Chicago White Sox 3-4 in series opener – MLB Update
New York Yankees lost to the Chicago White Sox 3-4 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Thursday, June 28 in the opening game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The American League Central Division leaders, Chicago put up a fine performance in a game that was played on quite a competitive note. Showing great determination, fighting spirit and mental strength, the White Sox outclassed their opponents in finer details
of the game to take a crucial 1-0 lead in the series.
Left-fielder Dayan Viciedo hit his 14th home-run of the season against David Robertson in the ninth inning to stun the Yankees. Relief pitcher Hector Santiago won for the second time this year to help the White Sox secure a memorable victory.
"It's a tough way to lose a game, but it's a physical error and it's going to happen and you've just got to put it behind you," manager Joe Girardi said.
"I would definitely say it's a little tougher," Robertson said in a post game interview.
"You've got a clean inning, you've got an opportunity to maybe get an out and allow a walk or something like that or even give up a base hit and still find your way out of it because you've finally got your rhythm on the mound," he further added.
Yankees, who were riding on a five game winning streak, looked a bit out of sorts as their offence failed to take advantage of their hitter’s friendly ballpark. Alex Rodriguez had another decent outing for New York as he doubled to deep left-centre in the
fifth inning to level the score 1-1.
Robinson Cano also made his presence felt with an RBI single to deep-centre in the fifth inning and the Yankees came back from behind to take a crucial 2-1 lead.
Mark Teixeira homered to left in the eighth inning to extend his teams lead to 3-1 and it seemed the Yankees were going to extend their winning streak to six games. However, the White Sox kept fighting right until the end to take an important victory over
the Yankees.
