New York Yankees beaten by Detroit Tigers 1-2 in ALCS Game 3 – MLB Update
New York Yankees were beaten by the Detroit Tigers 1-2 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday, October 16 in Game 3 of American League Championship Series.
Yankees’ offence, once again, failed to live up to the expectations and the Tigers held on to their slim lead to claim their third straight ALCS win. Manager Joe Girardi will be very upset with what he has seen from Yankees’ batters so far in the post-season.
Apart from Raul Ibanez none of the Yankees’ batters have been able to find scoring ways against the power Tigers’ pitching rotation. Doug Fister and Anibal Sanchez executed their game plan to perfection in first two games, limiting the Yankees to just four
runs.
"Normally, I guess you don't take Secretariat out in the final furlong, but that was pretty much it for him," Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland said. "I was not going to let him face Ichiro."
Justin Verlander, Tigers’ starter in Game 3, kept Yankees on the defensive as he gave up just one run in eight plus sharp innings to help the Tigers claim their fifth win in seven post-season games.
"You don't want to be in this situation," said second baseman Robinson Cano. "All we can do is not put our heads down and just prepare ourselves for tomorrow. It's not over yet."
"It's great to be up 3-0," Verlander said. "We have to win one, but against this team, you never know. Every game in the postseason is a must-win. You have to keep momentum on your side."
Yankees’ starting pitcher Phil Hughes could not match Verlander as he allowed three hits and one run in just three innings to take the loss. Relief pitchers Clay Rapada, Cody Eppley, Boone Logan and Joba Chamberlain combined to pitch four scoreless innings
but the Yankees were unable to put enough runs on the board.
With C.C. Sabathia starting for the Yankees in Game 4, they will have their best chance of putting things back on the right track. It will be interesting to see if Sabathia can out-duel Max Scherzer to keep the series alive.
