New York Yankees beaten by Tampa Bay Rays 1-4 – MLB Update
New York Yankees were beaten by Tampa Bay Rays 1-4 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Wednesday, May 9 in the second game of their 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Yankees’ closing pitcher David Robertson paid the ultimate price for his unforced errors, blowing save in the ninth inning. The Rays pounded the closer in the final inning to secure an unexpected victory. For the Yankees, Derek Jeter scored the first run
in the first inning, thanks to Robinson Cano who doubled to left.
With both teams struggling to find scoring ways, it seemed as if the Yankees will win the game but B.J. Upton and Matt Joyce had other ideas. Upton hit a sacrifice fly to the right in the ninth as Seal Rodriguez levelled the score.
With score tied at 1-1 in the ninth, anything was possible. Matt Joyce rose to the occasion and he smashed Robertson for a three home run in the bottom of the ninth to seal an emphatic victory for his team.
Yankees won the opening game quite comprehensively and they were the favourites to take 2-0 lead in the series. However, the Rays showed the baseball world just why they are one of the most successful teams of this season so far as they came back from behind
to snatch a confident win.
"It was the best and worst feelings that you could possibly have in the span of a minute," Joyce said. "It's always great to come up with a big hit like that, especially against the Yankees. It's just hard to celebrate when you're laying on the ground."
"I kind of told myself I had to," he said.
"Let's give the kid a chance," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Anytime you move up in a role it's an adjustment, but I have a ton of confidence that he's going to do a good job for us and he'll bounce back.
Rays’ win against the Yankees improved their record to 20-11 and it will be interesting to see if they can put up another solid performance in the decisive finale to break New York’s hearts.
